Duffy, the 16ft. Burmese python has escaped again from a "makeshift pen"
built by his owner in Mandeville, LA. This is the same snake that escaped
two years ago when it was 12 ft. long and created the uproar with the LA
State Legislature last year and problems this year. We all need to be
responsible owners and use correct husbandry to secure and take care of our
reptiles and amphibians to avoid publicity nightmares such as this. ~LGCHS
Legislative Committee
Report from the Legislative Committee:
The Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Commissioners met on July 1 and voted to
accept the Louisiana Reptile & Amphibian Task Force's recommendations on
regulations for Macroclemys temminikki. These recommendations will prohibit
the commercial harvest of alligator snapping turtles and also prohibit the
sale and possession of them and their parts thereof by anyone with a
collector's license, wholesaler/dealer's license, or a commercial fishing
license. Recreational harvest was reduced from four per day down to one
only. Offenses will be a class II violation which could include a minimum of
30 days in jail in addition to fines. These regulations will probably take
effect in December of 2004.
~Bill Watts~
Don't forget to renew your fishing license that is required to collect/keep Louisiana reptiles. It needs to be renewed
on or after July 1, not one day before or you will have to do it again.
We forgot to thank Dr. Bob Thomas for his donation of REPTILE Magazines that were dispersed at the May meeting.
Are you ready for Hurricane season? What are your contingency plans? Evacuation plans? What to do with your
reptiles? Please don't wait until the last minute.
The North Shore Reptile Show will be giving a $1 discount off the admission price to LGCHS members who present a current
membership card and is wearing a Society shirt with the Snapper Logo on it. Contact Bill Watts at info@lgchs.org or call
504-710-8456 if you need a membership card or shirt.
Which U.S. President had an alligator in his bathtub for a while? Answer will in next month's MB.
