Report from the Legislative Committee:
The Louisiana Reptile and Amphibian Task Force met on Friday,  April 23 at the DWF building in Baton Rouge.  They submitted proposed regulations to DWF which would regulate the ownership of constrictors over 12 feet and venomous snakes.  Look for these on the LGCHS website.  The East Baton Rouge Animal Control unit was unaware of the work that the Task Force was doing and asked Rep. Warren Triche of Thibidaux to amend Act 1221 to read "constrictors that may exceed 12 feet" instead of "constrictors over 12 feet".  We invited the EBRACU to the meeting on April 23 and they were impressed with the work of the Task Force.  We have asked Warren Triche to remove this amendment and also asked EBRACU to do call him also.   We will keep the LGCHS membership appraised of this legislation.   The LGCHS Legislation Committee has been in contact with PARD,  Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation.  They publish a pamphlet for Herpetofauna Regulatory Guidelines.  We will be contacting city and parish councils to ask them to utilize these guidelines if they write regulations for reptiles and ask that we also assist.  ~Bill Watts~

The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and SLU will host a Herpetology Workshop for teachers and outdoor recreation educators June 22-24 at Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station on the Manchac Wildlife Management Area.  The agenda will include presentations from DWF and SLU herpetologists.  Participants will set live traps to catch amphibians and will also observe and handle captive snakes,  turtles,  and alligators.  The free workshop includes meals and overnight accommodations.  For information contact Cheryl Fischer at (985)882-9601 or fischer_cl@wlf.state.la.us.

Back to the Bayou, Wetlands Day is Saturday,  May 8th.  Anyone who would like to participate,  please let me know.  The Event is from 9am to 4pm.  We should get there for between 8:00 and 8:30 to set up.  This Event is at the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge,  Interstate-10,  exit 251,  Eastern New Orleans.  We will share a tent 20 x 30 with a couple of other presenters.  Our station will be at the ridge trail area-along Hwy 90 (Chef) where the restrooms & trailhead is.  Please remember we can only bring native species.

If you are not interested in participating,  please come just to enjoy the event.  It is free,  witch is always a good thing.  You can go on canoe trips,  swamp tours, and just enjoy nature.  Hopefully we will have good weather,  I think we are due a break.  So let me know if you would like to participate,  But either way hope to see you there.

Kisatchie trip report:
A total of six of us went,  David Heidel,  David Chiasson,  Chris,  Cindy,  Rusty and myself. It was a blast.  We caught box turtles,  broad head skinks,  five line skinks,  fence lizards,  salamanders,  leopard frogs,  ribbon snakes,  Texas rat snakes,  diamond back water snakes,  banded water snakes,  scorpions,  centipedes,  millipedes,  and a wolf spider.  I think we should try this next year.  Maybe we could discuss this at our next meeting.
